Featured Teacher – Mr. Railsback

Third Grade

What is my favorite quote? Why? Who said it?

“It’s over 9000!” Vegeta – DragonBall Z Abridged. It just makes me laugh…

What is my favorite memory from elementary school?

I attended Garden Oaks Elementary and was part of the last 6th grade class (they moved 6th grade to middle school the following year). That year, I participated in the district wide Number Sense competition. I was the first student ever from Garden Oaks to win First Place at the Area meet…

Who was my favorite teacher and why? What did they teach?

Mr. Richard Davis was my favorite teacher EVER! He was the Algebra 2 teacher in my freshman year at Waltrip High School. He was very inspirational and always had a calm, yet serious demeanor. He always had an encouraging word, no matter what was going on.

What is my favorite part of teaching at Sinclair?

It is just the right place to be. The staff is the best, the administrators are fair, the students are the hardest workers, and the parents are always involved with some way to make our school better.

What is your dream vacation?

Since I love to sing, my dream vacation is to get a chance to actually sing a classical work somewhere overseas. I have traveled some overseas, and performed as an instrumentalist (I was a trumpet player…) a few times. But, to get to sing something like Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, The Mozart Requiem, or maybe even Carmina Burana along with having my family along for the trip would be the ultimate vacation!

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Every day, there is at least one little light bulb that goes on for a student. A good day at school is seeing several light bulbs, along with that look on the faces of the students that says “Hey, I got this!”

How do you show your school spirit?

I boo other schools…

What accomplishment fills you with pride so far this year?

I am still a relatively new teacher, and I still have a long way to go to become a great teacher. This year has felt like I have taken some good steps to achieving the goal of becoming great. Mr. Mashburn has really stuck with me and has been a tough, yet fair mentor in helping me improve on some weaknesses, and helping me further to get even better at some of the things I am pretty good at. Since “pretty good” is not where I want to be, I’ll keep working on becoming great.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

No matter what you are doing, the minute you choose to stop learning is the minute you should find something else to do…

What is your favorite song or band? Why?

I am a huge fan of the Bee Gees. I love how they write their music, how they sing it, how they harmonize with just three guys. I also love singing their songs, mainly because I am mostly able to do so… My favorite Bee Gees song is a tie between “Too Much Heaven and “Heartbreaker.
